Update ICOM Firmware Error Solved

This is the solution I find when I have trouble in updating my car diagnostic scanner BMW ICOM A firmware. Hope this helps you also.
Background:
I’m trying to update my ICOM firmware but I can only update the System/Boot firmware. Every time I try to update the Application firmware, I get a server timeout, no matter which browser I use.
Tool supported:
BMW ICOM A
Try this procedure here:
(NOTE: please be responsible to what you try, for some inexperienced may damage your device.)
1).Use your cable and connect BMW Engineer Software to port
2). Power ICOM by 12V power adapter or from 1x DLC
3). Use your browser (IE) and browse 169.254.92.38:60080/
User name: root
Password: NZY11502
4). Click “Update Firmware”,and you can find the version of firmware.
5). Select ICOM-BootImage-XX-XX-XX.bin, set image type to “SYSTEM”,
click “Send the file”
6). When it will say “Write the image file to the flash?”, click “Yes”,
then the ICOM led it will been RED
7). When it will say “The SYSTEM IMAGE update was successful”,
click “Update Firmware”
8). Select ICOM-ApplicationImage-XX-XX-XX.bin, set image type to “APPLICATION”,
click “Send the file”,the file is big so it will take some minutes to finish have patience.
9). When it will say “Write the image file to the flash?”, click “Yes”,
then the BMW ICOM A2+B+C led it will been RED again
10). When it is ok, click “reboot”.

When I was doing programming with ICOM A2, i cut off the power by accident and then it prompts that “The connection to ISIS is lost..”

Esys Fix 2014 M5 Crash after ISTA/P update(like flash module)

I have a 2014 M5 and flashed the car, the junction box and a bunch of other modules too, with ISTA/P 2.52.4 and an BMW ICOM clone A2 from www.obd2tool.com. It was the fourth or fifth car that I had flashed with this equipment.

It seemed that ISTA/P crashed during flashing. ISTA/P is now not able to read the VO from VCM (also E-sys) and if you load the stored VO and read out the ECU with E-Sys (read VCM isn’t possible) you see 0 ECUs.

It looks like that all ECUs are unavailable and in programming mode. He can open and close the car but nothing more.

Connection via E-Sys is only possible by Gateway/Url (OBD Ethernet cable) or ICOM IP. ZGW is of course not available.

What I did to fix it is, I used Esys to fix the BMW Diagnostic Tool.
I need to use the Psdzdata that was on the module before it was flashed.
Run these step like flashing a module

Here are the basic steps:
Go to Comfort Mode => TAL-Calculating
– Read and Save FA
– Activate FA
– Read and Save SVT Actual as SVT_ist
– Create an SVT Target
Under KIS/SVT Target Calculation Strategy, select Complete Flash
Select I-Step (shipm.) to match your original I-Level as read and shown in VCM I-Step (Shipment)
I-Step (target.) will be unselectable as it is fixed based on current PSdZData I-Level
Do a KIS/SVT Target Calculation and Save as SVT_soll
– Do a TAL Calculation and Save as SVT_tal
Go to Expert Mode => TAL-Processing
Load TAL (SVT_tal)
Load SVT Target (SVT_soll)
Select “Read FA” button.
Check radio button for “read VIN out of FA”
On ECU Tab, uncheck let top box in column “All” (All checked boxes should toggle to unchecked)
On ID Base Row for Modules, make check boxes in blFlash, swDeploy, cdDeploy, and ibaDeploy columns.
Press Check software availability
Press Start and it will proceed with processing TAL to flash
blFlash, swDeploy, cdDeploy, and ibaDeploy uncheck all boxes but these in the modules it finds.
Then Esys finds the modules its strange mine were half on 53.5 and half on 53.2 in some strange state.
after doing this I was able to restore them back to a working state before the upgrade. And everything was normal again

Mine looked like the attached picture. It was pretty bad. I really don’t trust Ista/p on a BMW ICOM A2 clone doesn’t seem to cause more issue then good during programming on these new model cars. ICOM clone from reliable sellers sometimes can be nice also.

(SOLVED) ICOM can’t read out E46 vehicle order/ VIN

I have a BMW ICOM clone and trying to connect to my E46 with ista D, but it says it can’t read out vehicle order or VIN. Here I offer two solutions, just for sharing.

Error: the vehicle could not be identified. Please check the access to the vehicle and check whether the testing-analysis-diagnosis has been activated.

I find a solution, just like with K+DCAN connect pin 7&8 with a switch that you can shut off when connecting to newer cars. I mean that I just connect 7&8 pins of icom A2 connector ??

Even with the K+Dcan it won’t connect, once i did this trick it connected well, with Ista and INPA ??

But, someone in forums say they cannot solve it with this solution, and think it might be the K-line problem. They put forward another solution as follows:

Dissemble the PCB board of your Car Scanner ICOM clone
Test the resistance (marked red in picture below) to check if the voltage is 39K with a multimeter, if it is, it’s normal.

Otherwise, the device is damaged. You’ve to send back for repair.

NOTE:
The solutions above are for BMW ICOM clone, not for USB interface, so it is helpless to get an OBD2-adapter where PIN 7+8 is bridged. And you are at risk to try, please be responsible for what you do with BMW ICOM A2+B+C.

[i8] Error: Refueling possible (solved via tools32 & E-sys)

While coding my car today (just normal feature like disable disclaimer, enable acoustic sound when lock/unlock, remember last air con setting, roll windows when opening, mirror fold with lock, etc…

Suddenly it start giving me error: Refueling possible, and sometimes refueling possible at 0%,

I tried to take the car to driving around for a while, around 5km, sometimes the error gone, but then come back quickly.

During coding, there is 1 time when coding air con setting (IHKA3 module), it finish with warning (red letter, I accidentally closed without reading the message, but then I press code FDL again, then this time ok without any error. After that the AC button is blinking (recalibrating).

I tried to use E-sys transmitter to clear all DTC but still not helping. Even tried hard reset, but the error still there.

What I try for my i8:
First time message shows: I did open the fuel cap and refill at petrol station, then close it, double check and confirmed it all ok => Message still shows.

Then I use tools32 with f01 files to clear all fault code, message still there.

Then I use E-sys and did all reset (Latest line clear all DCT), and hard reset. Lots of error messages show, but they all gone later (IE: Auto Start / Stop, transaction, pedestrian, etc.)

Then test driver (I don’t think this help at all)

Then open the fuel cap, fully open it, hang it on the small ring, then close it, then message gone.

===> I think have to clear fault code, then open then close fuel tank.

Also, close E-Sys, relaunch it, and use Read ECU instead of reading SVT.

All solved!! So if anyone have the same problem, check try to do what I did.

PS. BMW ICOM A2 I got is from www.obd2tool.com.Tool32 & E-sys are two software in Rheingold for bmw icom a2.

Oh, forgot to say, BMW ICOM has released the newest version V2015.08, just found this morning when I talked to the obd2tool customer service. The V2015.08 is only for $95, much cheaper than earlier versions.

How to solve mechanic replacement causes RAD2 failure

My used 2006 325xi occasionally going into transmission limp mode, then fixed by dealer, but RAD2 crashed and I was told I needed to replace a RAD2 for $830, then I post my issue on the BMW forum, finally I got the advised solution options. I think it can help others, so I would like to share here.

BMW car model and year:
Used 2006 325xi, 37,000 miles

Symptom:
After having the car for a week, and having taken two successful road trips, it started occasionally going into transmission limp mode.

Transmission issue fixed, but RAD2 crashed:
I put it into the local bmw scan tool dealer shop; the dealer diagnosed the issue to be a faulty mechanical. And I agree to pay $3500 of the $5000 tag. Later, the transmission issue was fixed, however, I was told the ICOM A2 crashed and I needed to replace that pay additional $830, which controls the radio.

To explain more specifically on how exactly did RAD2 fail
Everything was working perfectly other than the car occasionally activating the tranny failsafe mode, aka limp mode. There was no problem with the radio. The dealership says that the RAD2 failed when they were reprogramming or linking everything along the bus, and that they have tried everything they can to restore it to no avail. The next step is to replace the RAD2 module.

More questions and answers in order to find out solution
After I post my issue in the forum and wish some experienced technician can help me, they ask me some more detailed questions and I answer after them, I paste as follows, wish it can help others.

Question 1:
Damage to the RAD2 electronics should not a possible, but software SNAFU sure is. I note there are at least 2 versions of the module, and if programming for the wrong type, can see how the thing might ‘brick.’
Gotta wonder….did dealer restore previous condition? Or just keep trying to program? Seems like a reboot’s in order here, and a tech who tries to program maybe twice might throw up his hands, recommend an expensive R&R; move on.

Answer:
The thing is, dealerships are limited in how they can program a car.
The software they use will read the car, modules, etc and determine if updates are available and push them to the car if so. They cannot program modules individually without permissions from corporate. Even if they could, I don’t think they have NFS or something similar to try and force flash or recover a bricked module.

Advised solution:
Cheapest route would be to find a used RAD2 off eBay or junkyard, etc and swap it in. Depending on how the donor car was optioned, the radio may not need coding.
Coding is DIFFERENT than programming. Don’t risk updating the module at the dealer via programming. Find someone local and have them default the coding. Takes less than 5 minutes.

Alternatively, you can have a local coder try and force software onto the RAD2 module via NFS. The dealership does not have this capability. The coder will need a BMW ICOM unit. Don’t even bother if he tries over DCAN.

ICOM A2 ISTA-D not registered (solved)

Several months ago, I got BMW ICOM A2 emulator from China, and I’ve installed ISTA-D and ISTA-P like this video tutorial shows:

If I open ISTA-D I’m getting the message

I also copied the license from an other and earlier version(3.44.30 which seems to be update only) in this field but still can’t click on the next button which is greyed out.

After I’ve read it never would activate in a VMware VM I’ve installed it on a physical machine but same problem there.

Solution:
The only thing you need to do is run the “ID.reg” file so it will add some info to the registry. After this, ISTA/D should work fine!

BMW E46 GM5 Coding Problem with NCS Expert (solved)

I have adjusted lots of settings using NCS Expert with BMW ICOM A2+B+C for my E46 diagnosis and most of what I want now works great.
I do however have a problem with the GM5 module, as far as i can tell I have everything set as it should be but despite this, the roof will not go up and down on the remote, it does if I unlock/lock with the key and hold the key.
Also, my boot release button that was working fine now does not open the boot, this is on 2 keys so it must be something I am doing wrong.
Lastly all my windows open with one touch, including the button that does all 4, however none of them close with one touch, I think I have all settings correct in the file above so that they should close one touch too, very frustrating…
Is there anything wrong with my bmw diagnostic tool BMW ICOM A2 or where am I going wrong.

The settings like these are fine. Please try this as follows:
With NCS try to code the GM5 to default settings using the expert profile, after that check if the trunk button works again. (Just read GM5, set JOB to SG_Codieren then Code it back)
Then change the GM5 settings again you want and check if the roof work this time.
If the windows one touch still not works, try to reinitialize them, put key in ignition and turn it to position 2 then press and hold the window button down, if it’s fully down hold the button down for 10 sec longer, then hold window button fully up wait 10 sec longer.
When pushing the button down/up you need to press it fully down and up. (1-touch position)
If the window works, do the same with the other windows.
